Homemade Hot Chocolate Bombs with Mini Marshmallows

Hot Chocolate Bombs with Marshmallows are a playful, delicious treat your whole family can enjoy. Kids especially love helping to make them and then watching the chocolate shell melt and release hot cocoa and marshmallows when poured over with hot milk.

I admit I became hooked the first time I made these. The process is easier than it looks, and with a little practice you’ll be making perfect hot chocolate bombs in no time.

These cocoa bombs feel festive and a little magical, making them ideal for gifting. Package a couple in a clear cello bag or a small bakery box for a quick present, add them to an edible gift basket, or tuck them into stockings. You can easily customize the look for any season or holiday by changing sprinkles, icing, or marshmallow colors.

They’re versatile, too: swap decorations and colors for autumn, spring, or winter themes. You can even adapt them for evenings around a campfire or a chilly summer morning—change the toppings, and you have a treat for any time of year.

To make them holiday-specific, use seasonal sprinkle colors and icing patterns. Different colored marshmallows also help you match any theme—the possibilities are endless.

What You Need to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs with Marshmallows

Chocolate – choose milk, white, or dark chocolate for the outer shell. Use melting wafers, chocolate chips, or chopped chocolate bars from a quality brand for the smoothest results.

Cocoa mix – your favorite instant hot cocoa mix or homemade cocoa powder blend works well.

Marshmallows – mini marshmallows or dehydrated mini marshmallows fit best inside the shell and melt nicely into the drink.

You will also need a dome or sphere shaped silicone mold. Choose a size that fits into a standard mug once filled. A small food-grade paintbrush is handy for spreading chocolate evenly inside the mold.

Steps 1 & 2: Melt your chocolate gently using a double boiler or short bursts in the microwave, stirring between intervals until smooth. Spoon a small amount into each mold cavity.

Steps 3 & 4: Use a paintbrush or the back of a spoon to spread the melted chocolate up the sides of the mold, reaching the top edge so the rim is fully coated. Let the chocolate set, then repeat 2–4 times to build a sturdy shell. Refrigerate until completely firm.

After chilling, gently pop the hollow chocolate halves from the mold and place them on a clean tray for filling.

Fill half of the shells with a tablespoon of hot cocoa mix and a small handful of mini marshmallows or dehydrated marshmallows.

To seal, warm a microwave-safe plate for 30–60 seconds. Press the open rim of an empty shell briefly onto the warm plate to soften the edge, then place it flat-side down onto a filled half. Gently press and smooth the seam with a finger or a little melted chocolate to tidy any rough edges.

To serve, place a hot chocolate bomb into a mug and pour one cup of hot milk over it. Watch the shell melt away and the marshmallows and cocoa mix bloom into a creamy hot chocolate.

Decorating Cocoa Bombs

Decorate after assembling so toppings adhere to fresh melted chocolate. Dip or drizzle extra melted chocolate over the bomb and immediately add sprinkles, chopped candy, cookie crumbs, or crushed peppermints. If you want to pipe decorative lines, use a piping bag or a zip-top bag with the corner snipped and fill it with melted chocolate.

  • Microwave-safe plate or double boiler

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces melting chocolate (milk, dark, or white; chips, bark, or wafers)
  • 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
  • 3 tablespoons instant hot cocoa mix

Instructions

  1. Melt the chocolate using a double boiler or the microwave. If using a microwave, heat in 15-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth.
  2. Spoon a small amount of chocolate into each mold cavity. Use a paintbrush or the back of a spoon to spread the chocolate evenly up to the top edge of the mold.
  3. Allow the chocolate to harden, then repeat to add 2–3 more layers until the shell feels solid and sturdy.
  4. Refrigerate the filled molds for about 30 minutes until completely set. Carefully remove the chocolate halves from the molds and place them on a tray.
  5. Fill half of the shells with about 1 tablespoon of hot cocoa mix and a small handful of mini marshmallows (or dehydrated marshmallows).

Notes

  • Be careful not to overheat the chocolate, as it can seize. Melt slowly and stir frequently.
  • Dehydrated mini marshmallows can be used as an alternative to fresh minis for a longer shelf life inside the bomb.
  • Optional decorations include crushed candy canes, Andes mint pieces, or sprinkles.
  • Store finished cocoa bombs in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from heat and humidity.
  • Nutritional values will vary depending on the chocolate and cocoa mix used.
