Healthy Pumpkin Bread
This recipe blends classic fall spices with pumpkin and almond flour to create a moist, flavorful loaf. Sweetened with pure maple syrup and seasoned with pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon, the bread is rich without being overly sweet. It’s a great option when you want a dessert-style loaf that still feels mindful and simple to make.
I like to fold in low- or no-sugar chocolate chips for a touch of indulgence. Chocolate chips sweetened with stevia or dark chocolate chips work well if you want to keep added sugar low. If you don’t have a sugar-free option on hand, regular chocolate chips will still yield a delicious result.

I’ve recently started using almond flour more often. It delivers a tender, moist crumb in quick breads and muffins, and works especially well with pumpkin puree, which already adds moisture. When baking with almond flour, the balance of leavening and liquids is important to avoid an excessively dense texture.
Tips for Baking Pumpkin Bread with Almond Flour
Use almond flour (finely ground blanched almonds), not almond meal. Almond flour is finer and gives a lighter texture. Look for a super-fine grind for best results.
Almond flour contains more natural fat and moisture than wheat flour, so you don’t need extra oil or butter. Pumpkin puree also keeps the loaf moist. Be careful not to add too many wet ingredients.
Because pumpkin is mildly acidic and almond flour can yield a dense crumb, combine baking soda and a little baking powder to help the loaf rise and maintain a lighter texture.

What Type of Salt Is Best?
A good coarse sea salt makes a big difference in pumpkin baked goods. Salt balances the sweetness and enhances the spices. If you prefer a visible crunch and a bright finish, use flaky sea salt. A modest amount prevents the bread from tasting flat, especially in recipes that use less added sugar.

What Is Pumpkin Pie Spice?
Pumpkin pie spice is a warming blend typically made from cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. It’s the seasoning most commonly used in pumpkin desserts and adds depth to this loaf. If you don’t have a pre-mixed blend, combine those spices to taste. I often add an extra dash of cinnamon for more aromatic warmth.

The Recipe
Healthy Pumpkin Bread with Chocolate Chips
This healthy pumpkin bread is sweetened with maple syrup and made with almond flour for a moist, flavorful loaf.
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 40 mins | Total: 50 mins | Serves: 1 loaf
Ingredients
- 3 eggs, room temperature
- 2/3 cup pumpkin puree, room temperature
- 1/2 cup maple syrup, room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups almond flour (finely ground)
- 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup low- or no-sugar chocolate chips (such as a stevia-sweetened variety) or regular chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin puree, vanilla, and maple syrup until combined and smooth. Make sure the wet ingredients are at room temperature.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the almond flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon until evenly distributed.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until fully incorporated. Taste the batter and adjust spices or sweetness if desired—add a bit more maple syrup or a pinch of cinnamon to suit your preference.
- Fold in the chocolate chips.
- Grease or line a standard loaf pan with parchment paper. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
- Bake for about 30 minutes, then test with a toothpick inserted into the center. If it comes out with wet batter, cover loosely with foil and bake an additional 10–15 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Allow the loaf to cool completely in the pan before removing to avoid sticking or crumbling.
Notes
Almond flour can stick, so grease the pan well or use parchment. Let the loaf cool fully before removing. Ensure the center is baked through; removing it too soon can cause the middle to collapse and remain gooey.
