Ingredients Needed to Make a Beef Egg Roll Bowl

Beef Egg Roll Bowl ingredients.
  • Ground beef: Choose 80/20 for richer flavor, or leaner ground beef for fewer calories.
  • Cabbage: The classic egg roll base — green cabbage works best; shredded coleslaw mix speeds prep.
  • Carrots: Shredded for color and a touch of sweetness.
  • Red onion: Adds mild sweetness and color contrast.
  • Ginger: Fresh or paste for warm, aromatic depth.
  • Soy sauce: Salty, savory backbone for the sauce.
  • Oyster sauce: Adds rounded umami and a slightly sweet note.
  • Rice vinegar: Balances richness with bright acidity.
  • Sesame oil: A finishing touch for nutty aroma.

Prep the veggies

The Beef Egg Roll Bowl comes together quickly, so prep first: thinly slice a head of cabbage, shred the carrots, and finely dice the red onion. Using pre-sliced coleslaw mix or pre-shredded carrots will save time and make this an even faster weeknight dinner.

You can serve the bowl over rice or cauliflower rice if you want more carbs; otherwise the beef and vegetables make a filling low-carb meal on their own.

Recipe Tip

For faster prep, buy a pre-shredded coleslaw mix and pre-shredded carrots. They cut active cooking time dramatically.

Brown the beef

This recipe uses ground beef, but ground pork or turkey are easy substitutions. If you prefer a lighter option, ground turkey works well and keeps the texture lean.

Use a large skillet or a griddle. Heat to medium (about 375°F if using a griddle) and add a little oil. Place the ground beef block on the hot surface and let it sear for 2–3 minutes on each side to build flavor, then break it apart and cook until no pink remains.

cooked ground beef and veggies on griddle.

If you’re using a griddle, move the shredded cabbage, carrots and onion to the side and let them soften over low heat before mixing with the beef. In a skillet, add the vegetables to the beef and cook until the cabbage is tender-crisp.

Add in the sauces

Once the beef and vegetables are cooked, stir in ginger paste, minced garlic, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil and rice vinegar. Taste and adjust: add more soy for saltiness or more rice vinegar for brightness. Simmer briefly to let the flavors meld.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the bowl with a drizzle of a savory finishing sauce (like Japanese-style Worcestershire if you have it), toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onion. Add steamed rice or cauliflower rice if you want a heartier plate.

For heat, finish with chili oil, chili crisp, or sriracha.

Healthier options include:
  • Cauliflower rice
  • Zucchini noodles
  • Lettuce wraps

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes. This bowl reheats well and is perfect for meal prep. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.

Can I use a different protein instead of beef?

Absolutely. Ground pork delivers similar richness; ground turkey is a leaner option. You can also use chopped cooked chicken for a slightly different texture.
